THE NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM 2006: Trip Report |
We finally started touring in earnest, north to Giethoorn. It was supposed to be 97km but we got lost a couple of times and ended up with 118km on our odometers.
The bike paths are linked into various national routes. We were following LF3b (LF3a is the opposite direction). The route was well signposted, but the rectangular green signs are in odd places, come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are surprisingly easy to miss.
We did get better at spotting them after a couple of days, but this first day we went several kilometers out of our way a couple of times and had to backtrack.

We bought the ingredients for a picnic lunch at a supermarket in Zutphen on the way, but it was a warm day and by the time we got to Deventer we were in the mood for a cold beer and ate at a restaurant in the town square. Margaret had a pancake, it was thin, light and delicious. Pancakes are a national favorite and we had them several times during the holiday, but none were a patch on that first one. |
We arrived exhausted at Giethoorn at about 8pm with daylight fading. We were too tired to bother scrubbing up to eat in the restaurant so we bought a bottle of wine and a couple of desserts and ate it with the left over lunch in our room.
