Measures of Central Tendency
Average

Often used as a synonym for the 'Mean', but strictly speaking can refer to any statistic that characterizes a set of data.

Central Tendency

Measures the locality or centrality of the data. It is expressed through the measures of numerical average, mean, median and mode.

Mean

Often called 'the average'. It is the sum of the values in a sample divided by the number of values:

The mean of a population is represented by m.

Median

The middle value in an ordered set of data. If there are an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.

The median of the values 3, 5, 6, 20 is 5.5

Mode

The most common value in a set of data.

The mode of 3, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 9 is 6.
